Too many tabs open in Chrome? What to do
Last reviewed: 1 November 2026
Find and close what you don’t need, let Chrome sleep the rest, and group what you want to keep. Chrome’s own tools cover all three.

What to do in Chrome
- Find tabs quickly. Press Ctrl + Shift + A on Windows or Linux, or ⌘ + Shift + A on a Mac, to search your tabs.
- Free up memory. Open Settings, choose Performance, and turn on Memory Saver. Chrome deactivates tabs you aren’t using and reloads them when you go back.
- Group what belongs together. Right-click a tab, choose Add tab to group, then New group. Select the group’s name to collapse it.
- Reopen a mistake. Press Ctrl + Shift + T, or ⌘ + Shift + T on a Mac, to bring back the last tab you closed.
When tabs get too small to read
With dozens of tabs open, the tab strip shows little more than icons. TabOverview shows every tab as a picture in one grid. Its Tidy up button suggests duplicates, week-old tabs and background tabs that can sleep. It suggests and you decide, and every close has Undo for 30 seconds.
TabOverview is a free extension for Google Chrome on a computer, coming soon to the Chrome Web Store. It needs no registration and sends nothing to a server.
