What Chrome will ask, and why.
Chrome shows its own warnings when you install. They sound big, so here is each one in plain words.
- Read your browsing history on all your signed-in devices
- This is Chrome’s wording for reading your open and recently closed tabs, so they can appear in the grid. It also lets Saved show the tabs Chrome syncs from your other devices, and lets Home use your most visited sites if your Bookmarks Bar is empty. TabOverview keeps no copy of your other devices’ tabs.
- Read and change your bookmarks
- Saved pages are your normal bookmarks. It changes them only when you save, move or delete one.
- View and manage your tab groups
- So your groups show up in the grid and stay together when you save them.
- Replace the page you see when opening a new tab
- That’s the calm new tab page. You can turn it off in Settings.
Only if you switch them on
- Read and change all your data on all websites
- Chrome asks this if you turn on page previews. They’re the small pictures of tabs you’ve viewed, and they stay in your browser. Without them, cards show the site icon and title.
- Read and change your browsing history on all your signed-in devices
- Chrome asks this if you add history to search. TabOverview searches it only when you type.
TabOverview has no server, and its own security rules block it from connecting to the internet. Read the privacy policy.

Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There’s no registration, no card, no subscription, no ads and nothing to upgrade to.
What can TabOverview see?
Your open tabs and bookmarks, so it can show them to you. What it reads and keeps stays on this computer, including a list of closed pages for 30 days and daily lists of your open pages for 90 days. If you use Chrome Sync, Chrome carries your bookmarks between your devices, the same as your other Chrome data. TabOverview’s settings don’t go through Chrome Sync. The privacy policy lists all of it.
How can I check it sends nothing?
Open TabOverview, right-click the page and choose Inspect, then open the Network tab. You’ll only see its own files, and nothing going to the internet.
Do I need page previews?
No. Without them each card shows the site icon and title. With them, a tab gets its picture once you’ve viewed it. Fill in previews, in the View menu, does the rest in one go if you ask, waking sleeping tabs once and putting them back to sleep. Incognito windows are never pictured, and you can clear every picture with one click.
Why is there a new pinned tab?
That’s TabOverview, kept ready so it opens at once. There’s one in each window. Turn off “Instant opening” in Settings if you’d rather not have it.
How fast is TabOverview?
With 500 tabs, the grid appears in about 0.2 seconds. One search across your tabs, 20,000 bookmarks and 5,000 closed pages takes about 0.01 seconds. On a slower computer, both take longer. See how we measured it.
Will it slow Chrome down?
It runs nothing on the pages you visit, and its background part sleeps when you’re not using it. The pinned tab that keeps it ready does use some memory, and you can turn that off in Settings.
What happens if I remove it?
Your saved pages stay, because they’re normal Chrome bookmarks. Everything else it kept goes with it.
Can I change the shortcut?
Yes. Open Settings in TabOverview and choose Change, or go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts. On Mac the shortcut is ⌘⇧O. On Windows it’s Alt+Shift+O.
Does it work in other browsers?
It’s built and tested for Chrome on a computer. It doesn’t run on phones or tablets.
Is this the same as other tools called Tab Overview?
No. TabOverview, written as one word, is made by Global Charity Solutions Kft. in Hungary, and its only website is taboverview.com. Other extensions and apps use similar names, and they aren’t connected to us.
