How to close duplicate tabs in Chrome

Last reviewed: 1 November 2026

Google’s help page for Chrome tabs doesn’t describe a way to close duplicates automatically. Search for them with Tab Search and close the extra copies, or use an extension to do it in one step.

The Tidy up panel in TabOverview, offering to close 2 duplicate tabs, sort sites side by side and put 22 background tabs to sleep.
Tidy up suggests, and you decide. One copy of each duplicate stays open. Real screenshot of TabOverview. The sites in it are made up.

By hand in Chrome

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + A, or ⌘ + Shift + A on a Mac, to open Tab Search.
  2. Type the site or page name.
  3. Go to each extra copy and close it with Ctrl + W, or ⌘ + W on a Mac.

In one step

TabOverview’s Tidy up button lists duplicate tabs and offers to close them. One copy of each stays open, nothing closes until you say so, and you get 30 seconds to undo it.

TabOverview is a free extension for Google Chrome on a computer, coming soon to the Chrome Web Store. It needs no registration and sends nothing to a server.
